FURTHER U.K. GIFT OF £250,000.
Great Britain has made a second gift of £250,000 to
Hong Kong University, the Colonial office announces today
(Friday, March 16).
The first
Cate
a Treasury grant - was given nearly three years
ago as a gesture by the United Kingdom Government towards the
rehabilitation and development of the University which was
extensively damaged and louted during the car.
The money was untouched pending discussions between the
United Kingdom Government, the Hoɔng Kong Government nd the
University authorities on detailed proposals for reconstruction.
Plans for developing the University were drawn up in 1946 by
the Hong Kong University Advisory Committee. These plans were
modified from time to time in the light of further discussions
and finally resulted in a minimum development programme involving
a capital expenditure of at least £500,000.
The new allotment of £250,000, now made available from funds
set aside for higher education under the Colonial Development and
elfare Act of 1945, will increase the sun to £500,000 which is
in respect of capital expenditure only.
